PC SECURITY TESTS

While you are here please do three things:

(1) Thoroughly review and understand the threats you face on the Internet by reviewing the Internet Threat video presentation. If for some reason you can't review the video, a condensed written version is available here. If there are any terms you are not familiar with, you can look them up in the Security Glossary

(2) Test your computer’s exposure and risk to cyber-attacks, by doing a Port Scan, a Leak Test, Spyware & Hacker Tools Scan, Virus Scan, Registry Scan, Browser Test and Email Test.

(3) Review the information in the Internet Security Review that will give you some powerful tools to protect yourself online.

These free tests are designed to help you better understand how vulnerable your personal computer is to hacking and other privacy threats.

NOTE: No personal or computer-specific information is gathered or maintained during these tests. Information gained will not be retained, viewed or used by us in any way for any purpose whatsoever.

PORT SCAN

What does your computer look like to a hacker scanning for vulnerable computers? These two tests provided by GRC – Shields Up quickly scan your computer’s most used digital ports and show you exactly what a hacker sees when randomly scanning the Internet for vulnerable computers. These tests will give you a sampling of whether your computer’s ports are “Open”, “Closed”, or “Stealth”. For optimum security, your ports should all be “Stealth”.

What are computer “ports” and why are they targets for hackers? Your computer has over 65,000 different digital ports, or doors, that it uses to communicate with other computers over the Internet and on computer networks. Any one of these ports is a potential access point for hackers to invade your computer. It is critical that you hide your computer’s ports from the outside world. Without the right security technology, your computer broadcasts to other computers all ports that are open and prime for attack. Hackers can scan literally millions of computers in just a few hours looking for open ports on unprotected PCs. Once they’ve identified these open ports, it’s easy to gain access to the computer and take it over. Any port that is not “Stealth” can be one of the single greatest security holes in all computers today.

  LEAK TEST

Is your computer leaking personal information? Does your computer stop spyware or hacker tools from “phoning home” to the hacker? This test is a tiny downloadable program (25k), also provided by GRC – Shields Up, that simulates a hacker tool or spyware attempting slip past your defenses and leak out to the Internet. This test will quickly determine if your computer has a major leak where your personal information or any program can automatically leak out of your computer to the Internet. The Leak Test will quickly determine your computer’s ability to stop unauthorized programs such as Trojan horses and spyware from connecting to the Internet without your permission.

If your computer has a critical leak, and is unable to stop a random outgoing connection to the Internet, you will see the message “Firewall Penetrated”. This means your computer has failed to stop the unauthorized connection, and that you either have no firewall or that your firewall is not effective. If you are using a firewall and are asked whether to allow the Leak Test to connect to the Internet, you should deny the test from connecting to see if your firewall will truly stop such unauthorized outgoing connections. If your firewall is successful at denying the outgoing connection, you will see the message “Unable to Connect”.

  VIRUS SCAN

Computer viruses are called viruses because they share some of the traits of biological viruses. A computer virus passes from computer to computer like a biological virus passes from person to person.

There are similarities at a deeper level, as well. A biological virus is not a living thing. A virus is a fragment of DNA inside a protective jacket. Unlike a cell, a virus has no way to do anything or to reproduce by itself -- it is not alive. Instead, a biological virus must inject its DNA into a cell. The viral DNA then uses the cell's existing machinery to reproduce itself.

A computer virus shares some of these traits. A computer virus must piggyback on top of some other program or document in order to get executed. Once it is running, it is then able to infect other programs or documents. Obviously, the analogy between computer and biological viruses stretches things a bit, but there are enough similarities that the name sticks.

  REGISTRY SCAN

It's a known fact that over 93.7% of computers that are over 30 days old are infected with spyware and adware. Such software is rarely accompanied by an uninstall utility and even when it is it almost always leaves broken Windows Registry errors behind it. Even if you bought a spyware remover tool your Windows Registry might be broken - developers of those tools are focused on removing spyware and adware only, not every trace of software itself.

Problems with the Windows Registry are a common cause of Windows crashes and error messages. Click on the surgeon image to scan your registry.

  BROWSER SPY

This program can tell you all kinds of detailed information about you and your browser. Stuff like the version of your browser. What kind of things it supports and what it doesn't support. Furthermore it can provide you detailed information about JavaScript, Java, Plug-ins, Components, Bandwidth, Language, Screen, Hardware, IP, Cookies, Web Server, and much more.... These are the things websites are learning when you visit.

EMAIL TEST

This simple test will show you what kind of information about you is attached to your message in the form of email headers.
